Shadows in Theatre

While reading the play, we came across the topic of shadows to be a way of telling our story at points. I have seen one shadow performance in my life which was in Finland, This performance was completely using shadows as their method of theatre, but I cannot remember too much more about it, since it was a long time ago.
Shadow play or shadow puppetry is a form of story telling that has been popular in various cultures, but it has a long tradition in Southeast Asia. This form uses flat cutout figures that are held between a light and a translucent fabric to tell a story.
I did come across a theatre group called Attraction. It is a very known shadow theatre group, since they first got recognized at the 2012 London Olympics, when they performed for the Hungarian Olympic Oath Ceremony. Less than a year after that they won the Britain's Got Talent competition. After this they have performed in Las Vegas and in advertisement for Swinton Insurance. Their performances are very dance-based, but with the means of shadows they create different shapes with their bodies to tell the story.

Also, I found this introduction video for a Taiwanese dance group, Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, that uses shadows to their advantage, but don't use it as their only means of performance, but rather an element to add to the beauty and art form. I found that their use of light and shadow was absolutely beautiful and very creative, even haunting at times.

With our play, I feel that there is many possibilities for us to use shadows to tell the story or add effect into scenes. Especially showing peoples true intentions and Ui's rise to his position could be an interesting thing to explore with shadows, but there is also a scene where Roma's ghost comes to visit Ui, which could be a good opportunity for shadows.
