Even though the play works as a metaphor for Hitler and was written in the 1940's, I still feel that it is very current and links to the society and problems nations phase today. The play works as a mirror showing us what we are doing wrong and rallies to go and fix it, without giving us the straight mechanism to do so, but urges us to think about the solution ourselves. The play links very well to the current political climate, and how the extremist political groups have been rising up to the surface, but also dictator like rulers(hint, Putin in Russia) keep popping up, even though we say the society today is so much better than it was a hundred years ago. And in certain ways it is, but what I would like to tell with the play, is that even though things are better than they were, doesn't mean there is nothing to work on.
"The ooze that spawned him is as rich as ever!"
"The ooze that spawned him is as rich as ever!"
The epilogue has parts that refer to anyone being able to become Arturo Ui, anyone could have become Hitler and there is and will more people like them that rise and terrorize the world, since the source of the problem hasn't been solved yet. We, the society our culture and the humankind are the problem, since we let people like Hitler and other leaders such as Putin, Kim Jong Un and Mugabe rise to power. We can continue to talk about them as bad men, but it was us who supported them to gain that power. This support isn't necessarily direct, but even the fact that we are not actively trying to make a change is adding to the problem. I really want to make this point clear, especially since there will be multiple people playing Ui and if we use this opportunity wisely, we will be able to show to the audience, that perhaps it wasn't that these people are born evil, but rather that we, the society, give them the opening to become it.
The play works as a pastiche of 1930's gangster movie's and Shakespeare's play Richard III, play that is about rise to power and the short reign of the historical figure Richard III of England. Pastiche is a work of theatre that imitates the style of one or more artist. I think we should celebrate these two different styles, and make our performance look like a black and white movie, with the exaggerated movements of the Shakespearean style. We can do this with costume and lighting, but also when creating our scenes, taking inconsideration the Gest all of the time.
